Paraffin Crystal Modifier

Para-Minus 150 inhibits paraffin build-up. Unlike other inhibitors, Para-Minus 150 also disperses paraffin deposits into the produced oil when added continuously. Paraffin molecules are straight carbon-chain saturated hydrocarbons. Saturated means no double or triple bonds exist between the carbon atoms. That limits the structure of the paraffin to branch and ring formations of the carbon skeleton. The number of carbon atoms usually ranges from 18 to 34, and appearance can vary from an almost white wax to a black tar. Paraffin deposits in a two-step process: the molecules crystallize and then clump together. The crystallization temperature is called the cloud point. In light crude oils the cloud point can be visually seen as the temperature is decreased. As the crude continues to be cooled, the crystals grow together forming a network with enough resistance to flow that the crude becomes a solid. That point is measured as the pour point of the crude. Asphaltenes complicate pour point and cloud point considerably. As temperature decreases asphaltenes act as paraffin crystal growth sites, raising the pour point of the crude.

HOW PARA-MINUS 150 WORKS

Para-Minus 150 inhibitors distort the paraffin crystals, preventing agglomeration. While Para-Minus 150 will not dissolve paraffin, it does disperse paraffin, and the pour point of the crude oil can decrease by 60 degrees F. Therefore, the crude can be pumped out of the well without forming paraffin deposits. Effectiveness of Para-Minus 150 inhibitor can be shown with pour point testing.

Para-Minus 150 is based on olefin/maleic anhydride copolymer. The stick version is a slowly soluble form of the copolymer.
