Aqua-Clear Break 400 & 405 - Demulsifier
DESCRIPTION
Clear Break 400 & 405 effectively "breaks" oilfield emulsions. It works at economical concentrations in a wide variety of oils. Clear Break 400/5 is usually the preferred demulsifier for tank bottoms It rapidly "knocks" out water to reduce BS&W. Clear Break 400/405 is an oil-soluble demulsifying surfactant containing an ammonium salt of a naphthalene sulfonate, with an ethoxylated resin in aromatic solvents.
PURPOSE
Crude oil contains natural surfactants. When mixed with water the natural surfactants can emulsify water into oil. Emulsions are simply water droplets dispersed in crude oil. In some crude oil-producing areas, "reverse" emulsions can occur. They are oil in water emulsions. Emulsions raise the BS&W (bottom sediment and water) of oil, often to the point it is rejected by crude oil purchasers. Emulsions are often very viscous. Heat lowers viscosity and can speed up break time, but often will not completely separate an emulsion by itself.
CHEMISTRY
Surfactant molecules have both an oil-soluble and water-soluble part. Because the oil-soluble part is not soluble in water the surfactant molecule migrates to the oil-water interface. Normally water and oil will not mix; however, when natural surfactants are present in the crude oil, emulsions can form. The surfactant holds the emulsion together by being soluble in both the oil and water. Often sediment such as clay fines, iron fines, etc. are part of the emulsion and help stabilize it. Surface and interfacial tension reduction by Clear Break 400/405 allows water droplets to coalesce into larger droplets, and ultimately separate from the oil. Clear Break 400/405 is formulated to rapidly "drop" water from emulsions.
APPLICATION
The proper demulsifier concentration can be chosen based on a relatively simple bottle test. Normally 30 to 500 ppm is needed. An aromatic solvent should be used if Clear Break 400/405 needs to be diluted.
ADVANTAGES
- Wide treating of chemical emulsions.
- Cost-effective compared to heating.
- Low freezing point.
- Oil-soluble.
- Breaks BS&W out of oil.
